Crossing the road

Helping people to cross the road safely and in comfort (not being harassed by drivers) is a fundamental requirement of a crossing. Apart from completely segregated crossings taking people above or below the road there are three main categories: signal controlled, where traffic is required by law to stop at traffic lights, either at a junction or at a stand-alone pelican crossing; zebra crossing where drivers are required to stop if a pedestrian is on the crossing and an informal or courtesy crossing, where drivers are not required by law to stop.
